Apple Could Be Preparing a Major Ultra Upgrade

Apple may be getting ready to make the Apple Watch Ultra 4 one of the most exciting additions to its wearable lineup. While Apple isn't expected to completely redesign the Ultra, the next generation could bring some meaningful improvements focused on comfort, health tracking, performance, and software.

The biggest change could be something users have wanted since the original Ultra a thinner design.

A Thinner and More Comfortable Ultra

A thinner chassis is currently one of the more credible Apple Watch Ultra 4 rumors. Exact measurements haven't surfaced yet, but the reduction is expected to be noticeable both in the hand and on the wrist.

That could make a bigger difference than it sounds. The Ultra is designed for all-day use, but its large and rugged construction can make sleeping with it less comfortable. A slimmer body could make continuous wear and overnight sleep tracking much easier without compromising the rugged character that defines the Ultra lineup.

There have also been reports of a slightly larger display. However, this rumor isn't backed by particularly strong sources, so it should be treated cautiously for now.

Familiar Titanium Design With Touch ID

Despite the rumored slimming, Apple is expected to retain the Ultra's recognizable design language. The Ultra 4 should continue using a titanium case, flat sapphire crystal glass, and the familiar button arrangement.

The Digital Crown is expected to remain on the right side, while the Action Button stays on the left.

One potentially interesting addition is Touch ID. Rumors suggest Apple could integrate biometric authentication into either the side button or the Action Button. There is no confirmed placement yet, but Touch ID could make unlocking and authentication significantly more convenient.

A Major Sensor Upgrade Could Be Coming

The back of the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could receive one of the biggest changes this generation. Reports suggest Apple may be working on a redesigned sensor arrangement, with some rumors pointing toward an eight-sensor array.

Exactly which sensors Apple plans to use remains unclear. However, adding or rearranging sensors could improve the accuracy of existing health measurements and potentially allow the watch to monitor additional metrics.

The Display Should Remain Excellent

The Ultra 3 already offers an impressive display, featuring an Always-On Retina panel based on LTPO 3 technology. It can drop down to 1Hz when inactive and reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, while sapphire crystal provides additional protection.

The Ultra 4 is expected to at least match these capabilities. Any major improvements could depend on what Apple's next-generation chip is capable of delivering.

Battery Life Could Improve Without a Bigger Battery

Don't expect Apple to dramatically increase the physical battery capacity. Instead, the company could rely on improved chip efficiency to squeeze more runtime from a similarly sized battery.

The Ultra 3 already delivers around 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. The Ultra 4 should at least match those numbers, with potentially longer endurance if the new chip brings meaningful efficiency improvements.

Charging is expected to remain similar as well. The Ultra 3 can reach 80% in roughly 45 minutes, and while faster charging hasn't been specifically rumored, Apple is unlikely to make charging slower.

watchOS 27 Brings AI to Your Wrist

Software could be another major part of the Ultra 4 experience. The watch is expected to launch with watchOS 27, bringing Apple's latest AI-powered features to the wearable.

The new Siri gains greater personal context and can perform actions within apps. Apple is also introducing a dedicated Siri experience for Apple Watch.

A redesigned Dynamic App Grid will automatically surface frequently used applications, making them easier to access without scrolling through a long list. Apple Intelligence is also being integrated into several first-party watchOS apps, while the Health app is gaining expanded women's health features.

Health Tracking Could Become the Biggest Upgrade

The Ultra 4 is expected to retain the extensive health and outdoor features already available on the Ultra lineup. These include advanced workout tracking, ECG, sleep tracking, wrist temperature sensing, blood oxygen monitoring, Emergency SOS, satellite connectivity, diving tools, and outdoor navigation.

Hypertension notifications could also expand, while the rumored eight-sensor system suggests Apple is putting even more emphasis on health monitoring accuracy.

However, one highly anticipated feature probably isn't ready yet: non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Apple is believed to have made progress with the technology, but it reportedly hasn't reached the accuracy required for a consumer health product.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 Could Be a Major Refinement

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 doesn't appear to be shaping up as a complete redesign. Instead, Apple could be refining almost every part of the experience.

A thinner body, potentially smarter sensors, improved efficiency, powerful software features, and better health tracking could make the Ultra 4 a much more comfortable and capable smartwatch.

And if Apple manages to deliver all of that while keeping the rugged identity of the Ultra intact, the next-generation model could become one of the company's most impressive wearables yet.
