Apple’s thinnest iPhone could be about to get a massive second chance. The original iPhone Air grabbed attention with its incredibly slim design, but its compromises made it a controversial choice for many buyers. Now, Apple reportedly wants to fix some of those biggest problems while making the next model even thinner.

The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch early next year alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. If the latest reports are accurate, Apple could be preparing 2 major upgrades that might make the next Air significantly more appealing: a bigger battery and an additional rear camera.

iPhone Air 2 Could Be Even Thinner

The current iPhone Air is already just 5.6 millimeters thick, making it one of the slimmest conventional smartphones available. However, Apple apparently wants to push the limits even further.

According to a new report, the iPhone Air 2 could become another 0.4 millimeters thinner, reducing its overall thickness to just 5.2 millimeters.

That is seriously thin.

For comparison, the standard iPhone 17 is close to 8 millimeters thick. This means the next Air could be dramatically slimmer than Apple's regular iPhone models while maintaining a traditional smartphone design.

And remember, this isn't a foldable phone.

While foldable devices can achieve impressive thinness when unfolded, the iPhone Air 2 would deliver its ultra-slim profile in a conventional smartphone body. If Apple manages to pull this off without sacrificing too much functionality, the design alone could make it stand out in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.

A Bigger Battery Despite the Slimmer Design

But the design isn't the only interesting part of this potential upgrade. Despite making the phone even thinner, Apple reportedly plans to equip the iPhone Air 2 with a larger battery.

The original iPhone Air is believed to feature a battery capacity of around 3,150 mAh. That figure attracted plenty of criticism, with many people assuming that such a small battery would automatically result in disappointing endurance.

However, the original Air reportedly delivered better battery life than the base iPhone 16 in certain comparisons, showing that battery capacity alone doesn't determine how long a phone lasts.

Now, an earlier report has suggested that the iPhone Air 2 could feature a battery capacity of at least 3,500 mAh.

That would represent a meaningful increase over its predecessor.

More importantly, achieving this while reducing the phone's thickness would be an impressive engineering accomplishment. If Apple can combine a slimmer body with improved battery capacity and efficient power management, the next Air could address one of the biggest concerns surrounding the original model.

iPhone Air 2 Could Finally Get a Second Camera

Battery improvements would already be welcome, but Apple reportedly has another significant upgrade planned.

The iPhone Air 2 could finally feature a second rear camera, potentially adding an ultrawide sensor alongside the main camera.

The original iPhone Air relied on a single rear camera. Although that helped Apple maintain its incredibly slim design, it was also one of the biggest compromises for customers considering a premium-priced smartphone.

For many buyers, paying flagship-level money for a phone with only 1 rear camera simply wasn't an attractive proposition.

An ultrawide camera could change that.

It would allow users to capture wider landscapes, fit more people into group photos, photograph architecture, and take travel pictures without needing to step farther away from their subjects.

Personally, a telephoto camera would have been even more exciting, especially for people who enjoy zoom photography. However, an ultrawide camera arguably makes more sense for everyday users who frequently need to capture a wider scene.

Could These Upgrades Save the iPhone Air?

Apple appears to be addressing 2 of the original iPhone Air's biggest weaknesses while preserving its main selling point: an exceptionally thin design.

A larger battery could improve everyday usability, while a second camera would make the phone more versatile. Together, these upgrades could make the iPhone Air 2 a much more balanced device.

Of course, the final outcome will depend on factors such as pricing, real-world battery performance, camera quality, and how well Apple manages the engineering challenges involved in building such a thin smartphone.

If Apple gets those details right, the iPhone Air 2 could become far more than just another slim iPhone.
